    Tonight, a customer sent me a 1971 issue of I received a geological map and booklet of Kilauea Volcano in Hawaii. Mauna Loa and Kilauea were drawn by people walking, measuring, thinking, and building up the images. It feels as though the warmth of the researcher who has been out in the field remains in each fold. The accompanying booklet "Volcanoes of the National Parks in Hawaii." Before being a "tourist resource," volcanoes are The pages convey a quiet determination that the work is like the living, moving earth itself. Maps are not tools for predicting the future. I think maps tell us how the past became the present. It has been half a century since this map was drawn in 1971. Kilauea has erupted many times, changing its shape. But it remains a volcano. The people, the town, the shops, are probably the same. I am now standing on top of the accumulated time. A photo like this suddenly appears I can't stop going to map cafes. I'll keep it somewhere in the store and keep it safe.
